Every gram is important in air cargo transportation. Every gram has an impact on the air cargo freight rates. The volume is the same. But sometimes it may be difficult to know what metric dimensions the air cargo freight charges is based on.

Since the customer has been asking us how to calculate volume weight for air freight and has a lot of confusion, today we will talk about it.

In this article, you can learn how to calculate the chargeable weight and what factors need to be considered to get the right price.

Volumetric Weight For Air Freight

Volumetric weight for air freight is the weight of the goods based on the dimensions of the goods.

Combination of dimensions in inches and weight in kilograms: (length x width x height) /366 (this is usually done in us exports as dimensions are provided in inches but air freight is always in kilograms).

Chargeable Weight For Air Freight

In air cargo transportation, chargeable weight often causes a lot of confusion. First of all, you need to understand that each shipping of goods has two weights; Actual weight (kg or lbs) and volumetric weight (cbm) as we mentioned above.  There's no fair cargo freight forwarder can quote you only according to the actual weight. Except for sea transportation, air cargo transportation shall be subject to the higher weight. Air cargo freight forwarders, domestic motor carriers and brokers typically use chargeable weight to calculate their air freight and/or domestic trucking costs. So if you want know how to calculate chargeable weight, you need to always calculate these two weights. If the calculated size volume weight is higher than the actual gross weight of your cargo, this will be the chargeable weight. If the actual weight is higher, then this will be your charged weight. The reason is simple. Aircraft have limited space and cost more than shipping. Light but bulky cargo takes up all the space, but not enough to cover the cost of operating the plane.

How To Calculate Volume Weight For Air Freight

Volumetric weight for air freight (sometimes called dimensional weight) is calculated using the volumetric weight formula.

Different international logistics companies use different standards, but to determine the volume weight of a package, you only need to measure the length, height and width of the package.

Then get your calculator:

1. Multiply the dimensions of the package (length x height x width)

2. If you use cm, then divide the result by 5000(or 4000 for the EU economy).

If you are using inches, divide the result by 305(or EU Economic services 245).

3. The number you get represents the volume and weight of your package.

The Courier will compare the volumetric weight for air freight of the package with the actual weight and the air cargo freight charges will up to whichever is greater.

Precautions for Air Cargo Freight Transportation Charges

1. CBM in volumetric weight for air freight is the abbreviation of Cubic Meter.

2. In order to make full use of the space and bearing capacity of aircraft, heavy and light goods are generally matched reasonably. Air cargo loading is a technical activity. If it is well coordinated, it can make full use of the limited space of the aircraft, and if it is well done, it can greatly increase additional profits. If there is too much weight, it will waste space (if the space is not filled, it will be overweight). Too much cargo will be wasted (full load maximum weight). Therefore, rational distribution is very important.
